Description

I have tried illustrating Elaine, StoryBirdArtist 's OC several times. I tried multiple poses, but nothing seemed interesting enough. So I thought "What would be the challenges of living like a mouse, among mice?" and this scene came to mind, of her and a friend mouse being chased by a cat. It's been fun, but I think my style of drawing doesn't do her justice. I haven't managed to make her as realistic as I wanted her to look, and I feel that the characters are not very well discernible from the background. Let me know what you think!

And if you like Elaine, make sure to check out StoryBirdArtist's gallery and wonderful stories, you will surely be entertained:

I like the feet on the mouse and the character especially. (Also, the cat's toes are just so darn cute!) The anatomy of the cat's arms is a little off. My biggest issue with the piece is that it lacks immediacy somehow and I'm not quite sure why. The characters look like they are out for a jog and are having fun (well maybe not the mouse as much, but the girl looks like she has a happy smile on her face) If the cat was that close to them they would already be caught pretty much! The cat's pose doesn't seem to be correct for the action you're trying to show. Do you have a cat? If not maybe watch some videos of cats hunting and playing, it might help. It seems rather more like you took a picture of a cat in a sitting upright, playful pose (maybe batting at something over their head) and rotated it, rather than an actual mid-pounce pose, in which the legs would be fully extended outward. I'm not sure, I'm having a hard time explaining what it is that I'm seeing here, I hope I'm making some sense <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/> On another note, to help bring the mouse and the girl out from the background more, a little more highlight along the top would help, they seem to have shadows but no highlights and they blend in a little bit. Also, toning down the background and/or enlarging the dark area (taking the yellow patches farther from their heads) might help. The yellow competes for attention around their faces. The cat's expression is maybe not what you were aiming for, but it is an adorable playful cat expression and I like that part a lot. Actually, I like both parts of the image (the characters vs the cat), they just don't work together as well as you want them to.
